Iris Program

The ALI’s Iris Program offers students, scholars, or professors from any of UMKC’s International University Partnerships the opportunity to study ESL and/or academics at UMKC with a J-1 visa. Students in this program receive the discounted Kansas resident tuition rate of $425 per credit hour. Click here to download the booklet about the Iris Program.

One Semester Program for Students (Fall or Spring)

ALI Only

  • No TOEFL or IELTS requirement
  • 12 credit hours of ALI courses
    • Writing & Grammar
    • Reading & Vocabulary
    • Speaking & Listening
  • $4,679 tuition (plus Student Health Insurance and International Student fee)

Academics Only

  • 61 on the TOEFL or 6.0 on the IELTS
  • 12 credit hours of undergraduate courses
    • See below for participating UMKC departments
  • $4,679 tuition (plus Student Health Insurance, International Student fee, and Additional Department fees)

Two-Semester Program for Students (Fall and Spring)

  • 45 on the TOEFL or 5.0 on the IELTS
  • Fall semester in the ALI
  • Spring semester in UMKC undergraduate courses

  • $9,358 tuition (plus Student Health Insurance, International Student fee, and Additional Department fees)

Academics Only

  • 61 on the TOEFL or 6.0 on the IELTS
  • 12 credit hours of undergraduate courses for each semester

  • $9,358 tuition (plus Student Health Insurance, International Student fee, and Additional Department fees)

(1) All face-to-face international students are required to purchase health insurance through UMKC.

Students must have at least a score of 70 on the TOEFL to qualify. Students must take 1 semester of academics with a score of at least 80 on the TOEFL. Law School semester is 9 credit hours of graduate courses. Students pay Kansas resident graduate tuition rate.

Other Costs to Consider

  • Books for undergraduate coursework will cost about $250. Books for Law courses will be more expensive.
  • Living expenses will cost approximately $1,000 – $2,000 per month, depending on personal choices about where to live and shop and how to travel around the city.

    • Lunch will cost approximately $10 per day. The cost can vary depending on personal choices about where and what to eat.

To apply to the program, you will need to submit a bank statement. The amount required on the bank statement may be different from the amounts listed above. This is because the government needs to see estimated living expenses too.
