Unit-level Administrative Appointments

The procedures below should be used for department/division chairs, associate/assistant deans, unit or campus-level program directors, and faculty appointed to part-time administrative positions.

Required Process

External Search:
External searches should follow the normal search processes relative to a tenure-eligible or ranked non-tenure track faculty appointment with a Dean-approved search committee, job description for the department/division chair role and description for the role as a member of the department faculty, along with a description of the required application materials. The position will be posted in the UMKC e-recruit employment portal with at least one national posting for a minimum of 30 days. Simultaneous with the posting, direct outreach by the dean or search committee is required notifying all eligible faculty of the Chair and faculty position opportunity.
The Dean, in collaboration with the search committee, will consider all applicants and seek feedback, as appropriate, from additional stakeholders, prior to the Dean recommending a final applicant to the Provost and Chancellor for approval.

Internal Search:
Internal searches should follow a similar process as outlined above with the exception that approval for an internal department/division chair search (see CRR 20.110) must be requested and approved by the Provost and Chancellor, with documentation of the approval provided to HR along with the materials described below. Documentation may be an email.
The Dean will provide the Academic HR Specialist with evidence of approval to conduct an internal search, a job description outlining the expectations, responsibilities, and duties of the role, and a description of required application materials.
The position will be posted in the UMKC e-recruit employment portal for a minimum of 7 days.
Simultaneous with the posting an e-mail must be sent to all eligible department/division/program faculty announcing the opportunity and providing the Job Identification Number to be accessed through myHR.
The Dean, in collaboration with the search committee, will consider all applicants and seek feedback, as appropriate, from additional stakeholders, prior to the Dean recommending a final applicant to the Provost and Chancellor for approval.

Waiver of the standard hiring process:
Requests to waive the hiring processes outlined above in order to appoint a specific applicant will be considered only in extraordinary circumstances and will rarely be approved. Even when an extremely small pool of applicants is anticipated, an internal posting of at least 7 days is expected,

Requirements are effective April 1, 2022, but please follow them for any such appointments you may be initiating from now forward.
