Public transit can be essential for many communities and serves a variety of people. Making these transit stops more accessible and user friendly is important and can increase ridership.

So far the existing conditions of bus and transit stops vary from one another. Typically transit stops with higher ridership get more amenities but how can we increase ridership if we don’t spread these amenities to all transit stop. Occasionally there are stops, like the bus stop along 39th St., that have high ridership but lack necessary amenities for riders. Plenty of transit stops are just poles in the ground with no where to sit and it’s uncomfortable to stand with no protection from the elements. We can’t expect to increase ridership at low ridership bus stops if they lack basic necessities. All bus stops should at least have a bench and a map showing the bus routes. The more riders a transit stop has to more amenities it needs. Things like a shelter, trash can, bike rack, maps, lighting, and for streetcars showing when it will arrive are all things that are important for transit stops to have.

For the future of transit stop it’s important to also include the design aspects. Instead of just placing a pole in the ground, we should make transit stops more welcoming with the designs that are chosen and be more creative and unique. Letting the stops be more than just a place to wait for the bus or streetcar but a place that invites you.
