10th Annual Social Justice Book Lecture

Distance BetweenThere is another often untold side to the immigrant experience—of those who get left behind.

Join us to welcome Reyna Grande, author of The Distance Between Us, her memoir of the impact of immigration on her family, for the 10th Annual Social Justice Book Lecture and series.

Grande will speak at 6 pm on Thursday, Oct. 13 in Pierson Auditorium at UMKC’s Atterbury Student Success Center.  Sponsored by the Division of Diversity and Inclusion, the event is free and open to the public.

 

Additional events occurring during the 2016 UMKC Social Justice Series:

  • Tuesday, Oct. 4:  Film screening of “I Learn America” and local stories with the UMKC School of Education, 6-8pm, School of Education Learning Commons.
  • Monday, Oct. 10:  Social Justice Book Discussion with UMKC Libraries, 3:30-5pm, Miller Nichols Library, iX Theatre.
  • Wednesday, Oct. 19:  Undocumented Immigration: A Public Police Debate with UMKC Debate and DEBATE-Kansas City, 6-7pm, Miller Nichols Learning Center, room 151.
  • Thursday, Oct 20:  UMKC Civic Connections Volunteer Fair with the UMKC Office of Multicultural Student Affairs, 11am-2pm, Student Union, room 401.

LGBTQI Ally Campaign Oct 5

ally-2016LGBTQIA Programs and Services is excited to celebrate another year of support for our LGBTQIA community at UMKC.  We are inviting you and your colleagues to join us for a campus-wide photograph as part of LGBTQIA Programs UMKC Ally campaign, Wednesday, October 5th at 12:50pm on the steps of the Student Union.

The goal of this project is to provide allies a more visible presence on our campus.  We will begin organizing the group for a photograph promptly at 12:50pm, and hope to dismiss by 1:00pm for you to return to your day.  Please join us in demonstrating our campus support for our LGBTQIA students, faculty, and staff.

 

 

 

 

 

Each Voice Counts! Campus Climate Survey

climate-popupKeep an eye out for the Campus Climate Survey, which will open on October 4 and close on November 4, 2016.

We want to hear how you feel about the level of fairness, inclusion, and respect on campus.  Your feedback will be used to create and support a thriving community for all.

Please plan on taking the survey in one sitting (15-20 minutes):  because the survey is completely anonymous, you will not be able to stop and come back to it.  At the end, you can choose to enter your name for prize drawings.

Women’s Resource Fair on Sept 22

WC_LogoUpdate_7-1-15The Women’s Center is hosting a Women’s Resource Fair on campus. The Fair is free and open to the all students, staff and faculty.

It will showcase the programs and services offered by the Women’s Center and will also include information tables from various campus and community organizations, including voter registration hosted by the AAUW.

Participants will enjoy free giveaways, prizes and refreshments. The highlight of the Resource Fair will be a Circus Show Teaser with live entertainment by the all-female cast of the Great Kansas City Circus Show, featuring the KC Juggling Club and Moon Drop Circus. The entertainment will include juggling, acrobatics and aerials.

Connect with UMKC’s heritage and traditions during Founders’ Week Sept. 23 – Oct. 1. Founders’ Week is hosted by the UMKC Alumni Association around the anniversary date of Oct. 1; events throughout the week celebrate UMKC as Kansas City’s university and bring together students, alumni, and our  community.

The week culminates with UMKC Family Weekend!

Events include the Regalia Run, film screening of Finding Dory, and KC Royals vs. Cleveland Indians game.  Some events require registration and pre-payment—be sure to reserve your place early!

 

Celebrate Constitution Day on Sept 14, 2016

Constitution DayHow much do you remember from your civics and American government courses?  Test your knowledge in honor of Constitution Day!

Please join UMKC’s American Constitution Society (ACS) for a trivia competition over the lunch hour on Wednesday, September 14, 2016 in the School of Law Student Lounge.  Refreshments will be served.

Constitution Day became a recognized federal holiday in 2004, when legislation authored by Senator Robert Byrd was signed into law.  The Act mandates that all educational institutions that receive public funding provide educational programming on the history of the American Constitution on or near September 17th each year.
