The Written English Proficiency Test is a required essay test for all undergraduate degree- seeking students. It is required to take and pass the WEPT before enrolling in a Writing Intensive (WI) class. Students take the WEPT after passing English 225 and completing 45 credit hours.  Exam dates for this semester are September 22nd and November 3rd.  All dates for the year are posted on UMKC’s academic calendar. When you decide which exam to take, please enroll early.

So now that you have some information on why you need to take the WEPT and when to take it, what is it and how do you enroll?

The WEPT is a 3 hour essay exam offered twice per semester. The topic is different for each test, and past topics have included racism on campus, academic honesty, and gays in the military. You’ll be expected to write an essay on the topic, integrating information from the articles and including parenthetical citation and a Works Cited page. The Writing Center offers help sessions and workshops designed to help you succeed on this exam.

To “enroll” to take the exam, go to http://www.umkc.edu/WEPT/ and login with your UMKC user name and password. Please select an exam registration date and time and click the register button. You should receive a confirmation message on screen and email. After registering you will be able to download the Student Information sheet, which you must print, complete, and bring to the exam.

If you encounter problems or have questions, please send an email to wept@umkc.edu.
