Women’s soccer bested by Bulldogs in second half

The UMKC Women’s Soccer Team lost the third game in the season 1-2 in an attempt to defeat Drake Friday night.

The Roos started off the first half of the match against the bulldogs with an impressive score from Lexie Howard in the 16:46 mark assisted by Kara Priest.

Despite pressure from the Roos the Bulldogs were not short on shots, but stayed away from the score board despite uncomfortably close chances to score.

UMKC was only able to manage a one goal lead against all efforts as a pack of Bulldogs took down Kelsey Mothershead in her attempt to score in the latter half of the first period.

“We were the better team in the first half but we were only able to score one goal,” Head Coach Chris Cissell told the University News Service. “Drake was the better squad in the second half and they capitalized with two goals. We have to be able to play our best on both ends for a full ninety minutes, not just one half.”

The lead slipped just out of the Roos’ grip within minutes of the second half as the Bulldogs equalized the scoreboard in the 48th minute of the game, with a goal from the Bulldogs Rebecca Rodger just past Anna Lillig.

The Bulldogs struck again midway through the second to take the lead despite a promising free kick inside the box from UMKC sailing widely to the left but not to the favor of the Roos.

The Bulldogs’ Ali Smith snuck a header in to win it for the Bulldogs at the 68:48 mark. UMKC fought a tough battle in the remaining 20 minutes of the second with no pull through for the win.

The UMKC Women’s Soccer team gets another chance to win Sunday, Sept. 10, at home against Omaha.
