The Kansas City Repertory Theatre’s “A Christmas Story, The Musical!,” which had its world premiere at the Rep in 2009, was recently nominated for three Tony Awards, including Best Musical. The additional Tony nominations are for Best Book of a Musical and Best Original Score. The 67th Annual Tony Awards will be announced Sunday, June 9 on CBS.
The Rep’s 2009 world premiere of the holiday show was wildly popular with Kansas City audiences of all ages and became the highest-grossing show in the theatre’s history. Since then, the show has received a 2010 staging at Seattle’s 5th Avenue Theatre, also directed by Rosen; a 2011 five-city holiday tour; and its premiere on Broadway during the 2012 holiday season, where it was one of Broadway’s highest-grossing holiday shows ever.
“A Christmas Story, The Musical!” is produced by Peter Billingsley (the former child actor who created the role of Ralphie Parker in the film), Gerald Goehring (Frankenstein: The Musical), the late Roy Miller (West Side Story revival, The Drowsy Chaperone), Michael F. Mitri (Frankenstein: The Musical), Pat Flicker Addiss (Promises, Promises; Spring Awakening), Mariano Tolentino, Louise H. Beard, Michael Filerman, Scott Hart, Timothy Laczynski, Bartner/Jenkins Entertainment, Angela Milonas and Bradford W. Smith.
