Death of David Atkinson, Retired Professor of Political Science and Law, saddens many

David N. Atkinson, J.D., Ph.D., retired Curators’ Teaching Professor of Political Science and Law, passed away on Nov. 14. A memorial service is being planned for January. Details will be shared once finalized.

Atkinson received a Bachelor of Arts, Masters of Arts, Juris Doctorate and Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Iowa. He began teaching in the UMKC Political Science Department and the Law School in 1967.

Atkinson was a stellar teacher and, to that end, he was awarded the distinction of UM Curators’ Teaching Professor. He also was an avid researcher of the Supreme Court, focusing his most recent attention on the ways in which justices leave their position.

He was active in campus activities serving multiple times as department chair and chair of the Board of Publishers from 2005-2011. He retired from UMKC in 2011.

Atkinson will be remembered as an outstanding teacher, an expert researcher, a loyal colleague and a wonderful friend.
