UMKC Lecturer Henrietta Rix Wood’s prize-winning dissertation – “Praising Girls: The Epideictic Rhetoric of Young Women, 1895-1930″ – explores the efforts of young women to make their voices heard, analyzes their strategies and charts their early successes. The award was given by the Rhetoric Society of America.
In her dissertation, Wood examined the writings of girls in school newspapers, literary magazines and yearbooks from the Barstow School, Haskell University, Lincoln High School and Central High School.
A graduate of UMKC’s Interdisciplinary PhD program, Wood’s dissertation committee consisted of Dr. Jane Greer (English), Dr. Diane Mutti-Burke (History), Dr. Jennifer Phegley (English), Dr. Dennis Merrill (History) and Dr. John Barton (English).
