2011 Starr Symposium features Gloria Steinem and Dolores Huerta

The 2011 Starr Symposium, scheduled for Nov. 5, 8:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. in Pierson Auditorium, will feature keynote speakers, Gloria Steinem, political activist and writer, and Dolores Huerta, co-founder with César Chavez of the National Farm Workers Association. This year’s Symposium topic is “Age Becomes Us: Leading, Empowering and Building Capacity across the Generations.”

UMKC’s Women’s Center is co-sponsoring “Quilts That Changed the World: Women, Movements, Healing, and Art,” a lecture by Dr. Nancy Dawson, a quilt artist and Professor of Africana Studies. Dr. Dawson will discuss the intersection of quilting, activism, and community-building using examples from the work of local textile artist NedRa Bonds.

Partial closure of University Center during building’s renovation

Several changes are underway to prepare the current University Center for the Student Success Center Project, a renovation process slated for Nov. 2011 through Aug. 2012. During the renovation and construction phase, only specific segments of the facility will remain open. Conference and event activities will be suspended during this time.
