UMKC Chancellor Leo Morton has received the 2011 Southtown Council Public Achievement Award, which recognizes people in the community who have made a major impact throughout the entire metro area. Previous recipients of the Award are Marc Wilson, Nelson-Atkins Museum; Scott Burnett, Jackson County Legislator; Mo. Senator Yvonne Wilson; and Rev. Edward Kinerk, Rockhurst University

The Public Achievement Award is one of Southtown Council’s Beautification Awards, which have been presented since 1987 with the intention of acknowledging and promoting community improvements and investments. The Council’s Beautification Committee, which is made up of area representatives from the business, institution, and residential community, recommends the recipients each year. Other Council recognition projects include the monthly Southtown Sparkle Awards, Public Improvement projects, and Tulips on Troost. In addition to the Public Achievement Award, the Council also gives the“Southtowner of the Year awarded to outstanding volunteers.

The Southtown Council is a non-profit, self-sufficient organization serving the area within Brookside/Main, 47^th S., Bruce Watkins Dr., and 85^th St.  With more than 250 members, the Council provides a communication network between businesses, associations, institutions, and neighborhoods to create an environment for greater economic and community growth.
