BkMk Press author wins Writers’ League of Texas Book Award

UMKC’s BkMk Press of the University of Missouri- Kansas City is pleased to announce that Lorraine M. López has won the 2010 Writers’ League of Texas Book Award for her collection of stories (BkMk P, 2009). López will receive a $1,000 cash prize and a commemorative award.

Lorraine M. López’s collection of stories, Homicide Survivor’s Picnic, published in 2009 by UMKC’s BkMk Press has won the 2010 Writers’ League of Texas Book Award. López will receive a $1,000 cash prize and a commemorative award.

The annual award recognizes outstanding published books in nonfiction, fiction, poetry and literary prose, children’s books (long works), and children’s books (short works). Winners will be recognized on January 20, 2011, at the next meeting of the Writers’ League.

Additionally, in 2010 Homicide Survivor’s Picnic was named a Pen Faulkner finalist. Ben Furnish, managing editor of BkMk Press, said, “This award further confirms the national significance of Homicide Survivors Picnic, its author and BkMk Press. Lorraine M. López is winning recognition as a major voice in American letters. BkMk Press is delighted to publish her work.”

BkMk Press was founded in 1971 and became a part of UMKC in 1983. The press publishes fine literature by contemporary authors. Financial assistance for BkMk Press is provided by the Missouri Arts Council, a state agency, by UMKC, and by private donations.
