Program Concept Instructions
Academic Program Approval Policy

Request Type | Select from drop down menu: -New Program Concept Request |
Title | Enter the title of the program including program type (minor, major, certificate, etc.) |
Effective Date | Select a future date for catalog publication |
Description/Purpose/Rationale | Include a brief description, purpose, and rationale for the new program. |
Supporting Documentation | Include the four year curriculum and course offering schedule; a list of faculty that will teach in the program with semester-by-semester workload; and for UG programs, a major map/four year plan of study. You may also attach assessment documentation and unit support, if applicable and available. |
Following approval by the Academic Innovation Planning Committee, the implementation form will need to be completed. Please contact Laurie Ellinghausen, Associate Vice Provost for Academic Innovation for the latest implementation form.
Following submission of the implementation form, the Academic Innovation Implementation Committee will review the the proposal according to:
- Assessment plan/curriculum map
- Curricular design and fit with national standards (including SARA and online best practices, if applicable)
- Enrollment projections
- Admission requirements
- Projected budget
- Commitment from MCOM to market and support
- Faculty support and qualifications
- Five-year projection of number of degrees to be awarded
- Requirements for completing the program
- Approval of new courses
- Practicum or internship requirements, if applicable
- Plan for pursuing program accreditation, if applicable
- Program evaluation plan
- Online/hybrid/face-to-face delivery

Proposed CIP Code: | Select the ‘Find’ button to view available CIP Codes. Emphasis areas should be CIP Codes in line with the parent program. |
Program Oversight | Include the name, title, and email of the person overseeing the program |
Purpose | Describe the goals and objectives of the program |
Justification | Insert justification for establishing the new program or for changing the current program. |
Distance Delivery | Choose one of the following: -100% of courses available online -50% or more of courses available online -Less than 50% of courses available online |
Student Learning Outcomes | Enter all student learning outcomes and aligned instructional and assessment activities. |
Coursework | Enter all program requirements including the full curriculum as to be displayed for catalog publication. Please ensure the following: -Courses do not have ‘hidden’ prerequisites that are not included in the curriculum table (for example, MATH 110 is a prerequisite for one of the required courses, but is not listed in the coursework). -All courses are offered within a two-year rotation to ensure timely completion for students -Major electives may be set up in the degree audit to include all upper level, but those offered on a two-year cycle should be listed for student planning purposes. -A minimum GPA should be noted, if above UMKC minimum of 2.0. -A minimum grade should be noted, if above UMKC minimum D-. -Residency should be noted, if above 12 upper level hours within the major. -Any prerequisites for admission to the program should be listed as a separate section above the major requirements. -The catalog template must be followed for ease of student/parent navigation For assistance with program entry, contact Amy Hall or UMKCcatalog@umkc.edu. |

Submit Program to Workflow for Review using the green ‘Submit’ button.
Course proposals included in new or edited programs will need to be submitted by December 1st for inclusion in the next Fall catalog publication.
