A Note from the Editor on Reporting Research Grants and Awards in the E-Zine.

Wednesday, March 30th, 2011

ORS has not been able to keep their site up to date for many reasons so I cannot get the information ordinarily reported in each newsletter. Until their system gets up to date, I will have to rely on self-reporting from departments and/or PIs. I will need a copy of the award letter from the granting agency with all of the details and a copy of the ORS paperwork setting up the award account. I will then be able to report in a fashion consistent with the past.

Physics Department Gets Major Grant

Saturday, January 29th, 2011

The Department of Physics has received a large research grant from the National Energy Technology Laboratory of the Department of Energy.  The three-year project titled “Large scale simulations of the mechanical properties of layered transition metal ternary compounds for fossil energy power system applications” will be funded for $901,877 from January 1, 2011 to December 31, 2013. The PI for the project is Curators’ Professor Wai-Yim Ching. This project focuses on the computational development of a new class of materials called MAX phases for applications in next-generation fossil energy power systems.

$1,000,000 Grant to Psychology Department to Start Heartland Health Network

Friday, November 19th, 2010

Kathy Goggin, Jannette Berkley-Patton and Delwyn Catley (Psychology) were awarded a three-year, 1 million dollar grant from NIH to create the Heartland Health Network (HHN). HHN is slated to become a coalition of community partners working together to address health disparities  among African-American people by promoting wellness, facilitating health research and the dissemination of effective health interventions.  Founding partners include the Calvary Community Outreach Network (CCON), KC Free and UMKC.  The grant was one of approximately 30 proposals that were funded from 600 submitted grant proposals across the nation.
The “kick-off” event for HNN, a Community Health Fair, drew over 1000 people to the campus of the Calvary Temple Baptist Church on Saturday, October 30th. Chancellor Morton, Dean Vorst, Senator Clair McCaskill and Congressman Emmanuel Cleaver were on hand to express their support for the event and the mission of the HHN. Over 15 community health serving organizations including UMKC’s School of Medicine distributed vital health information and conducted health screening.

Research Grants

Monday, March 15th, 2010

ORS has now made available all of the grant data for 2009 so we can again take note of the awards by faculty in A&S. Since we were reporting partial information as it came to us between August and now, these lists may include items that have been previously noted in earlier issues of the E-Zine. But to make sure we do not miss any, the complete listings from ORS are included in this issue.

Grants and Awards

Wednesday, December 16th, 2009

Editor’s note: The UMKC Office of Research Services is transitioning the manner in which they report awards data and while we hope to be as consistent and accurate as we can in how we supply the College information to our readers, you will notice changes in how these items will appear in the E-Zine.

Grants and contracts data for November was not available at the time of publication. We hope to include this data in our January edition.
