Master of Arts in Theatre

Admission Requirements

  • Admission to the UMKC School of Graduate Studies
  • Acceptance by the Head of the Master of Arts program
  • A Bachelor of Arts in Theatre from a recognized university or college. A student having a bachelor’s degree in another discipline may be admitted with a minimum of 18 hours in theatre courses. A student who does not have 18 undergraduate hours in theatre may make up the deficiency by taking theatre courses at UMKC. These courses will not be credited toward the requirements for graduation in the master’s program unless approved by the Head of the Master of Arts program.

Steps for Admission

Please submit a UMKC application and fee along with official college transcripts to the Office of Admissions; and send two recommendation letters, your resume and a writing sample to:

For priority consideration for Fall semester admission to the Master of Arts in Theatre program, UMKC application and transcripts must be received by the UMKC Admissions Office and supplemental application materials must be received by Dr. Londré no later than March 1. Late applications and applications for the following Spring admission will be considered only if the program has not exceeded its enrollment limitation. In the event that there are openings for the following Spring, application materials must be received no later than November 1.

Students entering the master’s program may be asked to take a diagnostic examination in order to determine academic deficiencies and enable faculty to consult more effectively on planning the student’s program. Any deficiencies in undergraduate work must be made up in the first semester of graduate work if possible, and no later than the first year. In order to continue enrollment in the Master of Arts in Theatre program, a student must maintain a grade point average of 3.0 or higher.

Master of Fine Arts in Acting

Admission Requirements

  • Admission to the UMKC School of Graduate Studies
  • Acceptance by the Head of the Master of Fine Arts program
  • A Bachelor of Arts degree from a recognized university or college and acceptance by the faculty mentor for the area of admission.  A student having a bachelor’s degree in another discipline may be admitted upon the recommendation of the area head.  A precondition to admission might be a requirement of completion of undergraduate Theatre courses, as determined by the area head.  These courses will not be credited toward the requirements for graduation in the MFA program unless approved in advance by the area head.

Steps for Admission

  • Submit a UMKC application and fee along with official college transcripts to the Office of Admissions.
  • Request three letters of recommendation each with recommendation form; each with the provided letter of recommendation.
  • Submit a photo with résumé and a statement of purpose, including a two-page essay: page 1) the most memorable moment you’ve had in theatre, and page 2) a defining moment you’ve had in life unrelated to theatre.

Prepare an audition of three pieces

  • Two contrasting, 1 1/2- to 2-minute monologues: the first from a contemporary play and the second a dramatic verse monologue of the same length.
  • Sixteen bars of a song from a Broadway musical performed a cappella or with recorded accompaniment. (You provide CD/tape and player.)

Master of Fine Arts in Design/Technology and Stage Management
