Tobacco-Free Initiative

The UMKC Student Government Association (SGA) held a series of forums in February to share the details of the proposed policy to make UMKC a tobacco-free campus. As a follow up to these meetings, SGA sent out a survey asking students to share their thoughts on the proposal. Mel Tyler, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and Enrollment Management, shared the results with students via email on Monday, April 29.

Would you support banning smoking on campus?
Yes: 67%
No: 33%

Would you support banning the use of all tobacco products on campus?
Yes: 61%
No: 39%

Do you smoke or use tobacco products?
Yes: 14%
No: 86%

In his message to students, Vice Chancellor Tyler notes that faculty and staff will also be solicited, however the timeline for that portion of this initiative is currently unknown.
