School of Graduate Studies changes Deadlines for Award Applications and Community of Scholars Celebration
Breaking from past years, the School of Graduate Studies (SGS) is having its Community of Scholars celebration in February as opposed to April. April has notably been very busy for everyone at the end of the semester. After taking suggestions from several graduate faculty members and students, SGS decided that earlier in the year would be most beneficial to highlight graduate student success. The celebration will be Thursday, February 9, 2017. The format will be similar to the past. Students will be invited to present posters or oral presentations of their research. Awards will be given to the top winners. Added this year will be the “3-Minute Thesis” competition that was initiated last year at UMKC and other graduate schools in the country. Here again, there will be cash awards.
At the Community of Scholars we celebrate those who have been awarded the following:
School of Graduate Studies Research Grant
Opportunity Fellowships for underserved groups
MacQuarrie Fellowships
Preparing Future Faculty Awards
Outstanding Graduate Teaching Assistants
Outstanding Thesis and Dissertation Awards
IMPORTANT: To accommodate this new schedule, the deadline for applying for the Research Awards, Opportunity Fellowships, and MacQuarrie Fellowships is Monday, October 17, 2016. Students interested in applying for these awards should visit the School of Graduate Studies webpage: http://sgs.umkc.edu/fellowships-and-grants/
The deadline for receiving nominations by Units/departments for the Outstanding Thesis and Dissertation Awards and the Outstanding Teaching Assistantship award is Friday, September 30, 2016.
Information on the 3-Minute thesis will be forthcoming later in the semester.
Register for a UMKC Writing Group with Other Graduate Students
Forty six UMKC graduate writers participated in our Summer 2016 Pilot Writing Group program, and we’re excited to continue this program in the fall, starting September 12 and running through December.
“You get to decide the goals of your group…You have nothing to lose. It has definitely added value to my graduate experience at UMKC.”—Participating writer from Summer Pilot

Writing groups are groups of 5 – 6 graduate writers who meet on a regular basis (often, weekly) to work together. Graduate writing groups put writers in an academic community, help them enter conversations about research and writing, and help develop their scholarly identity.
