Goal: To develop a standard for post-construction stormwater BMP design, construction, inspection and maintenance competencies in the U.S. mid-continent region. During this session, EPA Region 7 will present the history of stormwater quality regulations and expert practitioners will introduce the range of disciplines and expertise necessary to successfully integrate the components of these stormwater treatment systems.

Upon completion of the seminar attendees will be better able to:

• Describe how the EPA’s past, present and future policies, regulations and rules impact stormwater management practitioners.
• Distinguish the roles that designers, contractors, inspectors and maintenance providers are called upon to fulfill in these increasingly complex stormwater systems.
• Define the reasons for and the benefits of collaboration among the project team.
• Demonstrate practical knowledge about the pollutant removal potential of engineered soils and native plants.
• Apply know-how gained from recognized experts in all phases of post-construction BMP design, construction, inspection and maintenance.

Vision for The Post-Construction Stormwater BMP Institute

The Post-Construction Stormwater BMP Institute is the newly created home for practitioners in this industry to gather – both in the classroom and over the Internet – and share ideas and experiences about the application of BMPs in the mid-continent region of the United States. The Institute is an initiative of the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Computing and Engineering along with leading practitioners in the fields of stormwater management and stormwater treatment. These programs are not designed for those with limited experience in this market. Rather, the content of these programs is geared toward practitioners experienced with stormwater BMPs.

This Session 1 is the first of two sessions in the cornerstone series. Session 2 will have a more specialized focus, with programs in:

• Design and Construction
• Inspection and Maintenance

At the end of Session 2, attendees will have the option of taking an exam covering the material contained in the first two cornerstone programs. Those who receive a grade of 80% or above will receive a certificate in their area of specialization.

A third session – this one two-days in length – is also under discussion. This Session 3 will further segment the training into the following areas of specialization:

• Maintenance

Project Management Professional (PMP®) Certification Preparation Course at Fort Leavenworth
Dates:  March 2 – April 26, 2013

This five week, 35 hour course will prepare project managers to take the PMP® Certification Exam.  The course will cover the nine knowledge areas and five process groups from the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK), as well as other related industry standards that the exam the will cover.

This course will provide current project managers the knowledge required to take the PMP exam.  Topics include project management concepts, processes, and knowledge areas as well as the terms and definitions required to pass the rigorous 200 question exam.  The class will be comprised of lecture, a variety of exercises, sample test questions, and text tips.

The Project Management Professional (PMP®) Certification is a globally recognized certification by the Project Management Institute (PMI).  Holding a PMP® certification demonstrates that you have the experience, education and competency to lead and direct projects.  It is recommended that all students become a member of PMI to reduce the cost of their exam fees and receive a free download of the PMBOK which is required reading for the course.  Membership is available at PMI.org.

• Identify the entrance criteria and application process for the PMP Certification Exam.
• Distinguish all subject areas that the PMP Certification Exam will draw from.
• Identify all Project Management Processes, terms, definitions, and formulas as defined by the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) and related industry standards that will be covered on the exam.

Instructor:  Lyn Heaton, PMP Lyn has been providing Project Management training to corporations in the Kansas City area since 2008. She is an active member of the Kansas City Chapter of PMI (Project Management Institute), currently serving on their board of directors as the VP of Professional Development.  Lyn received her Project Management Professional (PMP) Certification in 2001 and holds a Master’s Certificate in Project Management from George Washington University. Previously Lyn worked for over 19 years in the Telecommunications industry at Sprint Nextel.  She held the position of Project/Program Manager in various departments including Network Services, Information Services, Finance, and Marketing.  Before moving to Overland Park, Lyn was a computer science instructor at Austin Community College in Austin, Texas.  She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln.

This live six week course is taught by an expert faculty of licensed professors and working engineers.  Within the technical class sessions, you will have the opportunity to take advantage of four in-depth studies in the areas of Structures, Transportation engineering, Geotechnical engineering, and Water Resources and Environmental.

This course is specially designed to help you prepare by segmenting the exam into digestible components and delivering the key points likely to be covered in the exam.  You will also work through sample problems and have the opportunity to participate in group discussion.

Our course provides structure and support for your exam preparation.  During the first session, recently licensed PEs will lead a discussion group on exam day basics and what to expect – helping you to focus on the key tips and methods for completing the exam successfully.  You will have the opportunity to take a sample morning exam, which will help to prepare you for the exam format, question types and testing environment.  While this is a review course, it is no guarantee of successfully completing the PE exam.

Who Should Attend?
Engineers who are planning to take the Civil Engineering PE Exam in October 2012 or April 2013.  Professional engineers may find this course useful for updating skills in areas outside their normal practice with the benefit of earning PDHs for re-licensure.  By taking this course, a PE qualifies for three PDHs for each technical session attended.  Those who attend all 12 technical sessions can earn up to 36 PDHs—enough for more than two years’ requirements at only $22/PDH!
