Student Conduct

The Office of the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and Enrollment Management is responsible for upholding the UM Student Standard of Conduct for non-academic and non-equity behavior at UMKC both on- and off-campus, with the goal of promoting individual student growth and development.

Every student at UMKC is expected to abide by all University of Missouri System rules and regulations and to uphold the Standard of Conduct. TheĀ Standard of Conduct outlines behaviors and actions for which students, if found responsible, can be issued sanctions ranging from a warning to suspension and expulsion. The purpose of the Standard of Conduct is to maintain a safe campus community, one where students can learn and be successful. A student enrolling in the University also assumes an obligation to behave in a manner compatible with the University’s function as an educational institution.

Student Rights: Complainant

  1. To be treated with respect by University officials.
  2. Access to campus support resources (such as counseling and mental health services and University health services).
  3. To have an advisor of their choice accompany them to all interviews, meetings and proceedings.
  4. To have a right to a hearing and refuse to have an allegation resolved through the informally.
  5. To receive amnesty for minor student misconduct that is ancillary to the incident, at the discretion of the Appropriate Administrative Officer.
  6. To receive advance notice of the investigation and notice of a Formal Resolution Hearing.
  7. An equal opportunity to present a list of potential witnesses and provide evidence.
  8. To be free from retaliation.
  9. To be informed of the finding, rationale and sanction in writing.
  10. To report the matter to law enforcement (if applicable) and to have assistance in making that report.
  11. To request a no contact directive between the parties.
  12. Equal opportunity to appeal the findings and sanction.
  13. To request alternative attendance or questioning mechanisms for the hearing (e.g.: screens, Skype, questions directed through the chair, etc.)

Student Rights: Accused

  1. To be treated with respect by University officials.
  2. Access to campus support resources (such as counseling and mental health services and University health services), unless suspended from campus pending the completion of the process
  3. To have an advisor of the choice accompany them to all conduct and processes.
  4. To have a right to a hearing and refuse to have an allegation resolved informally.
  5. An equal opportunity to present a list of potential witnesses and provide evidence.
  6. To receive notice of the policies alleged to have been violated and notice of the appropriate process.
  7. To be informed of the finding, rationale and sanction in writing.
  8. Equal opportunity to appeal the finding and sanction.
  9. To request alternative attendance or questioning mechanisms for the hearing (e.g.: screens, Skype, questions directed through the chair, etc.)
