New Deadline for Application for Admission

We are writing to share an important reminder about a new application deadline for new students.

The university has established a June 15 application deadline for most new students. This includes freshmen as well as transfer students with less than 60 credit hours. These students will no longer be admitted during Walk-in Review Days (WIRD). WIRD will continue to be an option for upper-level students, as well as graduate and professional students.

The decision to eliminate the WIRD option for freshmen and transfer students with less than 60 hours was made in the best interest of those students. It is part of our efforts to improve retention and graduation rates. Statistics show that new students in these cohorts who apply and are admitted at the last minute have very low graduation and retention rates and frequently drop courses. These students are better off waiting until the next semester, and making a more carefully considered decision about college.

We are asking all members of the university community to please tell any prospective new freshmen or transfer students with less than 60 hours that they must submit their application for admission by June 15th to be considered for the Fall 2014 semester. In addition, all application materials such as high school transcripts, college transcripts, ACT/SAT test scores, and non-refundable application fee must be postmarked by June 15th.  (While late applications will be considered on a case-by-case basis, we do not want to encourage this.)

Because this is a significant change in admission procedures, this message will be communicated to faculty and staff through multiple channels over the next six months. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.
