UMKC has chosen Devon A. Cancilla, Ph.D., as Vice Provost for Online and Distance Learning. Cancilla has served as Dean, Business and Informatics, at American Sentinel University; and Director, Scientific Technical Services at Western Washington University, where he led the development of WWU’s Integrated Laboratory Network. He attended the University of Iowa, where he earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees, and UCLA, where he received his doctorate in Environmental Health Studies.
Cancilla’s new role will fall under the oversight of Gail Hackett, Ph.D., Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost. His appointment will include working closely with deans, provosts, and faculty to develop a strategic plan for offering an array of inline and distance learning courses, then lead implementation of the plan. He will also be involved in professional engagement at the national level in the continuing evolution of online teaching and learning. Cancilla will begin serving as Vice Provost for Online and Distance Learning August 1.
