I am pleased to announce the appointment of Wayne Vaught – Associate Professor of Philosophy, Medicine and Bioethics and Director of the Center for Applied and Professional Ethics – as Interim Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. Currently, we are appointing a committee to conduct a national search for Dean of the College. Vaught’s service as Interim Dean will begin July 1, 2011, and remain in effect until the position is filled.
Vaught has served as Associate Dean and has been a valuable member of numerous committees, including the Dean’s Strategic Planning Committees, the Steering Committee, the Curriculum Committee and the Medical Humanities Advisory Committee. In addition, he is a member of the Strategic Enrollment Management Committee, chairs the General Education Oversight Committee and co-chairs the Transfer Task Force. He holds a joint appointment between the College and the School of Medicine and served as chairman of the department of Philosophy.
A number of excellent candidates were under consideration for the position of Interim Dean, and I thank the faculty and staff whose input and suggestions aided in the selection process. I also would once again like to thank outgoing Dean Karen Vorst for her service to the College and the University. Her contributions as a leader, instructor and advisor have kept the College in a position of strength.
