Starting out about five years ago as a folk trio, Holsinger’s band On the Record (OTR) has evolved into a high-energy sound and song machine that offers up a creative mix of covers and original music. Three of Alex’s bandmates round out OTR’s Roo connection—Mike Middleton (B.A., ’87), Heather Kickhaefer (Conservatory) and Jim Lammers (BSEE, ’87). One of the band’s former members, Holsinger’s son Luke, is now a freshman at the UMKC Conservatory of Music and Dance. “The band offers me a creative outlet for writing music, which is different from my normal writing for peer-reviewed journals,” Holsinger says. “Students have attended shows once in awhile—often mentioning later something to the effect of ‘Yeah, I had to show up just to see whether or not you sucked.’”
