Bill French Alumni Service Award

Loving your alma mater is one thing—working tirelessly to make it better is another. That’s exactly the dedication Michelle LaPointe has shown UMKC.
From serving on the College of Arts and Sciences Alumni Board, to co-chairing the university’s 75th anniversary celebration, to helping plant 75,000 tulips on and around campus, she is being honored for her extensive commitment to the university.

LaPointe served as co-chair of UMKC’s 75th anniversary celebration. She was so dedicated to the task that she never missed a planning meeting, despite battling the flu and recovering from knee surgery. She also chaired the UMKC Alumni Awards celebrations for four years, helping transform it into one of the most anticipated events of the year. While serving as an officer of the Alumni Association Governing Board, she helped launch the Alumni Spring Theater event and Alumni Night at UMKC basketball.

She has given back to the community through fund raising efforts for the Kidney Foundation and Ronald McDonald House, and serves as the director of development at the Lyric Opera of Kansas City. Her love of opera even helped UMKC’s communication studies department when she developed “Opera Goes to the Movies,” a humanities course that includes a life performance at the Lyric.
