UMKC Participating in New Program to Help Students Earn Associate Degrees

Missouri Reverse Transfer Program expanded to include all public colleges and universities in the state

The University of Missouri-Kansas City is participating in a new statewide program aimed at increasing the number of students in Missouri with an associate degree.

The Missouri Reverse Transfer Program allows students who have earned at least 15 transferable credit hours at a qualifying two-year college, and have transferred to a four-year college or university, to transfer hours back to the two-year college to receive an associate degree.

Many times, students earn a significant number of college credits but do not receive a degree. The Reverse Transfer Program enables students to earn an associate degree while they are working on a bachelor’s degree. Students who are not currently attending college but who have completed credit hours at a two-year and a four-year institution may also qualify for a reverse transfer degree. An associate degree can help students qualify for more job opportunities and higher pay.

Legislation calling for Missouri to create a reverse transfer program was approved by the General Assembly in 2012. A steering committee of officials from higher education institutions across the state worked together to create the program and conduct a pilot project, which paired up 12 two- and four-year colleges and universities.

After a successful year-long pilot project, the program has been expanded to include all public colleges and universities and participating independent higher education institutions in Missouri.
