UMKC Gallery of Art Hosts Digital Media, Performance Exhibits

Sonance Media Exhibition and
Interdisciplinary Event Series Begins in November

Kansas City, Mo. – The University of Missouri-Kansas City’s Gallery of Art is going into uncharted territory. Over the next few weeks, the gallery will host a series of events that include digital media, performance and installation-based art.

The Sonance Media Exhibition and Interdisciplinary Event Series will run Nov. 4 – Dec. 6. Spanning diverse disciplines such as dance, sound, video and installation, Sonance is the first exhibition of its kind at the UMKC Gallery of Art.

Digital media work will be on view between events. Artist Cooper Holoweski will present Katabasis; Jeffrey Moser, Poppies Will Put Them To Sleep; Joshua Haycraft, Celebrations

Event schedule:

MIRO: generate. degenerate.
11:30 a.m., Tuesday, Nov. 5.
A multi-media dance performance using only sustainable energy. All sound, media, and light will be powered by the physical actions of the performers.

Visual Reverberations
3 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 7.
Local artist Robert Howsare in conversation with Cristina Albu, UMKC assistant professor of Contemporary Art.

Brian Lynn: Overcharted Waters: The Hunger Bends
2 p.m., Wednesday, Nov.13.
Installation with electro-acoustic music composed by UMKC Conservatory student Brian Lynn.

Craig Colorusso: MB 89
11 a.m. – 7 p.m., Thursday Nov. 21. A reception will take place from 5-7 p.m.
Installation with live sound component performed by visiting artist Craig Colorusso.

Electret: featuring Ricky Allman and Kurt Flecksing
11:30 a.m., Monday, Dec 2.
Ricky Allman, UMKC associate professor in painting, and local artist Kurt Flecksing will demonstrate a series of experiments in the visual effect of sound waves on liquid.

Gemini Revolution
11:30 a.m., Tuesday, Dec. 3.
Local band performance, with visuals by UMKC Art and Art History Professor Barry Anderson’s students.

New gallery hours are as follows: Mondays and Wednesdays 9 a.m.-4 p.m.; Tuesdays 11 a.m.-4 p.m.; Thursdays 11 a.m.-4 p.m., 5:30-7:30 p.m.; Fridays 12-2 p.m.
