Team of business majors among 23 to compete
A team of business majors took 2nd place at the in the 2016 Community Bank Case Study Competition. The students are seniors in the Henry W. Bloch School of Management Department of Finance at the University of Missouri-Kansas City.
Maria Davis, Jacob Renner, Dakota Sommerfield and Clara Stahl made up the UMKC team.
Each team produced a 15-20 page paper and a 10-minute video to promote public awareness and an understanding of community banks and to stimulate interest among undergraduates in careers in community banking.
The competition theme was lending to small businesses, where each team evaluated their partner bank’s management of lending, the impact of the bank’s lending on the community and the impact on the bank’s financial performance.
UMKC partnered with Freedom Bank in Overland Park, Kan., a requirement of the competition. CEO and Founder Kurt Knutson and President Dave Vander Veen met with the team to share information about the bank’s small business lending. They also talked with one of the bank’s small business loan customers and discussed the views of Kansas State Banking Commissioner Deryl Schuster on the role of community banks in lending to small businesses in the region.
As second place winners, their paper will be published in a special conference publication for the national conference, which takes place in Sept. with the Federal Reserve Bank in St. Louis. Highlights of their video will be shown at the conference.
Southeastern Louisiana University was selected first-place winner. Competition was open to undergraduates at any university, and 23 teams from 20 schools participated in this first competition. The competition was sponsored by the Conference of State Bank Supervisors, which is the official organization of state banking commissioners across the country.
