They were a group of soldiers with something in common — a knowledge of art and how to preserve it.

A recent segment of KCUR-FM’s Up to Date focused on The Monuments Men, a special division from the Allied forces during World War II who braved the battlefields to save priceless art and architecture from the ravages of war. Their story will grace the silver screen this weekend.

After the war, the Monuments Men returned to the art world. One came to the University of Missouri-Kansas City as a professor. James Reeds began his long career at UMKC in 1969. He took an associate professor emeritus status upon his retirement in 1990. Two more of the Monuments Men landed at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. KCUR-FM is a service of the University of Missouri-Kansas City.
