KANSAS CITY, Mo. – A tech-savvy generation is about to get even more so, thanks to Google Fiber’s Summer App Camp. When the camp is finished, the high school participants will have created their very own apps.
Nearly 50 rising high school sophomores, juniors and seniors from the Kansas City, Kan., and Kansas City, Mo., school districts will learn how to develop apps – the software applications designed to run on smartphones, tablet computers and other mobile devices.
The two week-long sessions will take place at the University of Missouri-Kansas City’s School of Computing and Engineering, where UMKC students will take teaching app development to the next level. After the campers have mastered the basics, they’ll begin designing apps of their very own. Ultimately, the sessions will culminate with a Demo Day from 1-3:30 p.m. at Google Fiber Space, 1814 Westport Rd, Kansas City, Mo., where campers will demonstrate their apps to a panel of judges. The Demo Days will take place July 19 and 26. An awards ceremony for the day’s best apps will begin at 3:30 p.m.
“We are actively training the next generation of Kansas City engineers. The Summer App Camps will not only nurture the students’ existing interest in this industry, but help them see that their skills can be honed and applied to the real world,” Kevin Truman, dean of UMKC’s SCE, said.
The camps will run July 15-19 for the Kansas City, Mo. students and July 22-26 for the Kansas City, Kan. students. Students will present their apps on the Friday of each camp.
“Google believes that all students should have the opportunity to become active creators of tomorrow’s technology. As members of the Kansas City community, we want to invest in the next generation of local computer scientists and engineers, and provide opportunities for all students to engage more directly in technology,” Rachel Hack, Google Fiber community manager, said.
Thanks to scholarships from Google Fiber, the camp is being offered at no charge to the participants.
