How did UMKC help you reach your current position?
UMKC School of Law put practical experience first, and didn’t just use it as a buzzword. My professors always found a way to bring a classroom problem into the real world. Whether it was participating in mock trials or developing business plans in a solo- and small-firm entrepreneur classroom setting, UMKC prepared me to start advocating for others as soon as I graduated and passed the bar.
What did you learn about yourself at UMKC?
I learned that I chose the right profession. Teachers used to joke that I needed to get a job where I could talk all day. I have always wanted to be a voice for others. I have always wanted to represent others. Going to law school allowed me to reach that dream. The law fascinates me in the way it affects all of us through our daily lives. The law binds us all together. We, the people, get to shape the law and determine our society’s foundational principles. I enjoyed every day at UMKC Law, no matter the stress it entailed, because I enjoyed being in the legal environment.
You started your own practice after law school. How did that happen?
Adam (Krause) and I had class together, we did mock trial together. When the time came, and we received job offers, we evaluated them together. We talked to our mentors. We came to the decision we could be successful starting our own firm.
Who was the most influential person to you at UMKC?
That is a very difficult question to answer. All of my professors, administrators, faculty and staff at the UMKC School of Law pushed me to be my very best. They all taught me to identify my strengths and weaknesses. They all made me feel like they cared about my studies and future career. They all created a family environment with open doors. I grew a lot, both academically and personally, during my three years at UMKC Law. Everyone at the law school nurtured my development in one way or another.
What is one word that best describes you?
Prideful. I truly appreciate all of the relationships I have been able to build over my academic life and young career. I have spent most of my life in an academic setting. I have been lucky enough to share experiences with people of all types of backgrounds and cultures. I grew up in an environment where differences, whether it be cultural, socioeconomic, or ideological, were embraced. The relationships I have been able to make mean a lot to me because they shaped me to be tolerant and openly accept others. I treasure those experiences every day in my practice.
