Comedian Yoram Bauman hosted by Economics Department

Yoram Bauman isn’t a typical stand-up comedian. Then again, he isn’t a typical economist, either. For years, Bauman has taken his unique blend of economics-based comedy everywhere from Time Magazine to PBS. On Sept. 10, he’ll take it to the University of Missouri-Kansas City.

The UMKC Department of Economics invites the public to see “the world’s first and only stand-up economist” at 7 p.m. The show will take place in the Student Union’s large theatre, 5100 Cherry, Kansas City, Mo.

General admission tickets are $10; students get in free, but are encouraged to reserve a ticket. Prospective economics students also get in free, and are encouraged to reserve a ticket for the UMKC economics department’s 6 p.m. informational session.

Corporate discounts, at $7 per ticket, are available for groups of 10 or more. Parking will be available in the new Cherry Street Parking Structure’s fifth and sixth levels.

Bauman, who earned his Ph.D. in economics from the University of Washington, performs regularly at colleges, corporate events, and comedy clubs across the country. He has shared the stage with everyone from Robin Williams to Paul Krugman. Bauman is the co-author of the two-volume Cartoon Introduction to Economics. A book signing will take place before and after the show.

The unusual blend of stand-up comedy and economics is befitting for the UMKC Department of Economics, which is internationally-recognized for its own unique approach to economics.

The department has a history of going against traditional approaches to economic theory in favor of Modern Money Theory. As a result, UMKC economics professors correctly predicted the U.S. housing market crash, the recession, and the Eurozone debt crisis.

Stephanie Kelton, associate professor and chair of the department of economics, hopes that the Stand-up Economist event will bring together not just the area’s economists, but people who have a more casual interest in the economy.

“Yoram is well-known for putting a fresh, funny spin on economic theories and principles. We hope that the public will join us, learn a little more about our ground-breaking department, and share a few laughs,” Kelton said.
