School of Nursing and Health Studies in Top 20 – Again!

Same month, another Top 20 honor for the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Nursing and Health Studies’ online graduate nursing programs.

This week, College Choice, an independent college search and rankings website, has published its 2015 ranking of the top 50 online Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) programs in the United States. UMKC is No. 16, the highest of any public university in Missouri or Kansas.

Earlier this month, U.S. News and World Report ranked UMKC No. 18, the third year in a row the school has ranked in the Top 20.

“This is further recognition the UMKC online graduate nursing program is consistently among the best in the country,” said Devon Cancilla, vice provost for Online and Distance Learning at UMKC.

The College Choice Rankings of the Best Online Masters of Nursing Programs provides a useful framework for the search into an MSN degree.

“It is our hope our 2015 rankings will aid the future leaders of nursing as they select an MSN program that is right for them,” said Sara Wilhelm Garbers, lead editor of the College Choice online nursing rankings.

The rankings were compiled based upon faculty credentials, technology, student support, accreditation and cost. Special attention was paid to the academic strength of the schools, along with their ability to both retain and graduate their students. College Choice staff cross-referenced a variety of data sources to measure these factors, including the National Center for Education Statistics, the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing, individual program websites and U.S. News and World Report rankings to ensure accuracy and credibility.

“We are thrilled with the continuing recognition,” said Ann Cary, dean of the UMKC School of Nursing and Health Studies. “We are not going to rest on our laurels — we constantly are striving to offer more opportunities and a higher level of learning and training for this exciting and in-demand profession.”

The UMKC School of Nursing and Health Studies has been offering online graduate programs since 2002, making it a pioneer in distance learning in nursing. The school’s online graduate programs are designed to offer classroom-quality instruction with the reach and convenience of web-based learning. Online students are expected to participate in online discussions as if they are present in the classroom. Technology allows two-way communication in real time via multiple modes, including webcams, microphones and text. Students also experience on-site learning through summer institutes where they are required to attend clinical training or dissertation work sessions, and deliver presentations to classmates and faculty.
