Transmissions / Signals invites new interpretation of artworks
Recent works by Warren Rosser and James Woodfill will open the University of Missouri-Kansas City’s Gallery of Art exhibition series for 2015-2016. Entitled “Transmissions / Signals”, the show broadens the understanding of the paint medium as interpreted by these two artists.
Opening night will include a reception on Thursday, September 3 from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Fine Arts Building, Room 203, 5015 Holmes St. Free parking is available in the Cherry Street parking garage, 50th and Oak St., levels 5 & 6.
“Transmissions / Signals” has taken the form of a book as well, scheduled for release in early September. The book recounts the dialogue between Rosser and Woodfill that began in the late 1970s, when Woodfill was a student and Rosser his instructor at the Kansas City Art Institute.
Because Woodfill and Rosser’s definition of painting is unrestrained, their approach to teaching and art has allowed a richer experience for painting students. Woodfill teaches at the Institute in the Painting Department; and Rosser is recently retired from the same program.
Although trained as a painter, for many years Rosser made sculpture and mixed media constructions. In 1998 he returned to painting, where he continues to develop an abstract language, exploring architectural forms and constructed space with subtle use of color. Woodfill’s work ranges from gallery pieces to large-scale permanent public works. Using a variety of media and methods, he has explored our relationships with our built environments.
The exhibit concludes on Friday, October 16, 2015.
