Pride Lecture by Lea DeLaria Postponed

Appearance by accomplished actress, comedian, singer and spokesperson for social justice to be rescheduled

The appearance by actress, comedian and jazz musician Lea DeLaria as the speaker for the Ninth Annual Pride Lecture at the University of Missouri-Kansas City has been postponed.

DeLaria is perhaps best known for her recurring role on the Netflix series “Orange is the New Black,” and the postponement is due to a change in the taping schedule for the show. The Pride Lecture had been scheduled to take place at 6 p.m. Wednesday Nov. 18 in Pierson Auditorium in the UMKC Atterbury Student Success Center. The organizer of the lecture, UMKC’s Division of Diversity and Inclusion, plans to reschedule the appearance either in December 2015 or Spring 2016.

DeLaria was the first openly gay comic on television in America, which led to numerous roles in television and film. Several of her TV credits are: “Awkward,” “Californication,” “The Oblongs,” “One Life to Live,” “Law and Order: SVU,” “Will and Grace,” “Friends” and “Matlock.” Selected film credits are “First Wives Club,” Dear Dumb Diary” and “Edge of Seventeen.” As a jazz singer, DeLaria has performed at Carnegie Hall and the Chicago Symphony, among other prestigious venues. She released her sixth recording this year, House of David, an album of jazz versions of 12 classic David Bowie songs.

Since 2007, the Division’s Pride Lecture Series has brought LGBTQIA thought leaders from across the country and globe, including Dustin Lance Black, Laverne Cox and Ari Shapiro.
