President Obama Names UMKC Alumnus to Federal Court

Stephen Bough Nominated for U.S. District Court for Western District of Missouri

WASHINGTON, DC — President Obama has nominated University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Law alumnus Stephen R. Bough to serve on the United States District Court for the Western District of Missouri.

Bough was one of four nominees announced last week.

“I am pleased to nominate these distinguished individuals to serve on the United States District Court bench,” Obama said.  “I am confident they will serve the American people with integrity and a steadfast commitment to justice.”

Bough is a partner at the Law Offices of Stephen R. Bough, where his practice focuses on insurance coverage and personal injury litigation.  Before he founded his current firm in 2006, he practiced law at Henning & Bough from 2002 to 2006 and at Shamberg, Johnson & Bergman from 1999 to 2002.

Bough began his career as a law clerk for Judge Scott O. Wright of the United States District Court for the Western District of Missouri from 1997 to 1999.  He received his J.D. in 1997 from the UMKC School of Law, where he served as editor-in-chief of the UMKC Law Review. He received his B.S. in 1993 from Missouri State University.

“We are proud – though not surprised – that President Obama has nominated Steve Bough to this position. Steve is a tireless worker with a sharp legal mind who will effectively serve the interests of justice. We are proud to count him as a UMKC School of Law alumnus,” Ellen Suni, dean of the UMKC School of Law, said.

Bough has proven a committed and involved alumnus. He is a former UMKC Law School Alumni Association President, and has served as an adjunct professor at the UMKC School of Law. Bough has also served on the UMKC Law Foundation’s Board of Trustees since 2000.

Other nominees included: Richard Franklin Boulware II, nominee for the U.S. District Court for the District of Nevada; Judge Salvador Mendoza, Jr., nominee for the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Washington; and Staci Michelle Yandle, nominee for the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Illinois.
