Tonei Perry Wants To Help Future Accountants

At UMKC, the students are our story. Look, listen and learn about us through interviews, photographs and videos of our students. Read the rest of the student stories and go to our tumblr site and follow.

NEW! We’ve started the next chapter of our student storytelling series, Dynamic Duos, about faculty and staff mentorship.

We’d love to hear from you at mcom@umkc.edu about students, faculty and staff who have great stories to share.

TONEI PERRY

Bachelor of Science in Accounting | Henry W. Bloch School of Management | December 2016

Why did you choose UMKC?

I’m from Hazelwood, in the St. Louis area. I chose UMKC because of the great accounting program and business school.

How has college inspired you?

It’s inspired me to succeed and have a better future for myself.

Since entering college, what have you learned about yourself?

I’m stronger than I thought. College is really hard work. I’m still hanging in there. I haven’t given up.

What’s the best piece of advice you have ever received from a professor?

Don’t be passive. I should speak up more and ask for help when needed because teachers will normally work with you, especially if you are trying.

What do you admire most at UMKC?

I admire the accounting program and its ability to grow as a school. For example, the new buildings to better our education. The school has a lot of guest speakers and events that help students with life, goals, school, work and more.

What excites you?

Experiencing new things, sightseeing and trying different kinds of food.

What’s your greatest fear?

Letting everybody down, including myself. Also, failing. I don’t want to be a disappointment.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

I would have my bachelor’s, master’s and CPA license. I see myself married, possibly with children, and that I have traveled part of the world. Hopefully I will have my accounting firm up and running, and my accounting program for high school students. The program would help students get interested in accounting. I want them to try and do real accounting work. I will help the students with applying for college scholarships, internships and jobs. I will provide my own scholarship as well. I will stick with them throughout college and their career. Hopefully, they will come back and help other students do the same.

What is one word that best describes you?

Helpful. I love helping people when I can. I enjoy giving back. This can be in the form of volunteer work, donations, listening, giving advice, etc.
