DEMOND MILES

Bachelor of Health Sciences | School of Nursing and Health Studies | 2016

Where is UMKC taking you?

UMKC is taking me farther than I have expected. It’s setting me up for my future and getting me ready to accomplish one of my goals. My long-term goal is to graduate with a BSN, and then branch off to a nurse practitioner program. I plan on being a traveling nurse.

Why did you choose UMKC?

I did a lot of research on a lot of schools. They had a good nursing program and graduation rate. It’s close to home (St. Louis) but I can still be myself and do what I do.

Why nursing?

In high school I wasn’t aware of what I wanted to do for college but I knew time was getting close and it was time for me to decide on something before I went off to school. We had majors in high school, and mine was an EMT. Through that I was able to shadow at Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital and that is what started me doing my research on the healthcare field. With the training and experience that I had, there was more than enough for me to decide on what I wanted to study for.

What are your lifelong goals?

I see myself established in my profession. Nurse, husband, father. I’d like to be a traveling pediatric nurse, move to Texas and then around the states and then around the world.

What motto do you live by?

“Pray. Work hard. Be patient” I go by this motto because as a child I heard this over and over from my grandma. Now I understand what it means. I have come so far and experienced so many things that nothing is impossible for me to accomplish. I can do anything as long as I put my mind, heart and hard work into it. All it takes is time and prayer.

What excites you?

I’m a funny person who has a good sense of humor and I love to use it at all times, so being funny and making people laugh is what makes me happy. I want to see my family happy and well taken care of.

What’s your favorite place at UMKC?

The Student Union. I love networking because I’m a people person. I love getting to know other people.

Who do you admire most at UMKC?

Tiffany Williams (senior director, Student Support Services). She has shown me no matter what I go through, I can accomplish anything. She’s a great role model and also a great person. I appreciate her and all she’s done for me during my time at UMKC.

What is one word that best describes you?

Conqueror. I have striven so hard to get where I am now, through all of my trials and tribulations, I have managed to stand strong and take control of my path to success and faith. I know I will succeed and reach my goals. All I have to do is “Pray. Work hard. Be patient.” Because I know that my time is coming.
