Where is UMKC taking you?
Into a design field in the Kansas City area.
Why did you choose UMKC?
Women’s Golf and the Urban Planning and Design program (she’s from Fayetteville, Ark.). I liked Kansas City and felt like I could fit in.
How has college inspired you?
College has inspired me to step out of my comfort zone and push myself educationally, physically, socially and mentally.
Since entering college, what have you learned about yourself?
I’ve learned a number of different aspects about myself but the ones that stick out the most are: being positive both to myself and others affects everything; my faith is the reason I’m here today and without it I wouldn’t be the person I am; and I’ve learned that I have to believe in myself in school, on the golf course and in my day-to-day activities. Without belief or confidence, rising to a higher standard is impossible.
What’s the best piece of advice you have ever received from a professor?
Discover what you are passionate about and then pursue it.
Who do you admire most at UMKC?
I admire my golf coach, Brianna Broderick, for believing in me and giving me such a wonderful opportunity at UMKC. I admire the athletic director, Carla Wilson, for her incredible passion and persistence in growing UMKC. I admire the entire Architecture, Urban Planning and Design Department because of their love and desire to make positive change in the society we live in today. Through many classes and hours in studio, we learn that we must be the change we wish to see in the world.
You’re involved in a number of activities and organizations at UMKC. Can you tell us about them?
Being a part of the Women’s Golf team has been great because it has introduced me to so many people and allows you to get connected with all of the athletic programs. Sports teaches you so many things that you can bring to the classroom and life.
The Cause on Campus is a Christian group that meets up and I am one of the college girls’ leaders. We build friendships, relationships and continue to fellowship together as we grow together in life. It’s one of my favorite things that I am a part of during the week!
Lucerna was a great place to further develop my writing skills by reading and revising papers for the undergraduate research journal. I loved being a part of something that highlighted the work of students on campus.
Planning & Design Students Organization (PDS) through the Urban Planning and Design program has been a great way to do some fun things throughout the Kansas City area. Some students even attend the American Planning Association Conferences, which are at different locations throughout the United States.
I was a part of the Honors Program for the first three years at UMKC, and it was another great way to challenge my learning and push me to be better.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
I hope to be in a situation/job/place that allows me to be creative and design. I want to help people better themselves and make places better and more sustainable for the future.
What is one word that best describes you?
Inspiring. I strive to make everyone around me (including myself) become a better version of themselves.
What motto do you live by?
My Christian faith is the biggest guide. But I like the quote “The good you do today will be forgotten tomorrow but do good anyway.”
