How has college inspired you?
College has inspired me to really just take advantage of all the opportunities around me. There are so many people who want to make it big, but they don’t take advantage of the opportunities presented to them. I think it’s important to appreciate what’s out there and really go for it.
Since entering college, what have you learned about yourself?
I’ve learned that it’s important to be independent but to also have a close circle of confidants that you can rely on no matter what, and I feel really lucky to have found that early on.
Why did you choose UMKC?
I love that UMKC has so many specialty programs. For anything you want to do here from business to pre-med, there’s a great program for all of it and it’s great to widen your horizons and make the most of your time here.
What is one word that best describes you?
Genuine, because with me, what you see is what you get. I’ve never been one to play games. I keep it straightforward and honest.
What’s your greatest fear?
Not achieving my dreams and goals.
Where is UMKC taking you?
I want to see the world and make a difference internationally however I can. For a career, I chose computer science. I’d like to consult and have the freedom to travel.
What are your lifelong goals?
Eventually I’m considering the Peace Corps. I’m looking at people online and seeing how individuals are not necessarily out to make money but to make a difference, especially through business. So something philanthropic would be my ultimate goal, but we’ll see. I’d go anywhere; there’s a lot to see in the world. I want to go wherever the people need the most help.
Tell us about your volunteer work.
I’ve volunteered at a homeless shelter, athletic games, and more recently, the Down Syndrome Guild of Greater Kansas City Step Up walk. The main thing is that I want to make a difference in the community and I want it to reflect back well on UMKC.
What motto do you live by?
If it’s meant to be, it’ll happen. It’s good to give your best effort, but after you put in the most you can, you have to leave it up to faith — there are a lot of factors beyond your control.
What excites you?
The unknown. In five years I want to look back and not have guessed how things would turn out. I want things to happen not as planned. I want something unexpected.
