New Lane Closures for 51 Oak Project

Closings impact 51st Street, Brookside Boulevard

With UMKC Commencement complete, VanTrust Real Estate and their contractor, The Weitz Company, will resume street and utility work related to the 51 Oak project in the public right-of-way surrounding the project site.

Work is scheduled to begin after 9 a.m. on Friday, May 20 on a new storm sewer at the Brookside Boulevard and 51st Street intersection. The initial phase starting at this time will close the east half of the intersection and block access from Brookside east onto 51st Street. Northbound traffic on Brookside Boulevard will also be detoured during this time north of 51st Terrace.

At some point over the weekend, work will transition to the west half of the intersection, restoring access from Brookside Boulevard east onto 51st Street and blocking access from Brookside Boulevard west onto 51st Street. When this work begins, it will provide one-lane for northbound and southbound traffic on Brookside Boulevard. All work for this initial phase will be complete on Monday, May 23.

Phase 2 of the 51 Oak project will begin this summer, June 6 – Aug. 15. Brookside Boulevard will be reduced to a single lane of traffic in both the north and southbound direction. The intersection at 51st Street and Brookside Boulevard will see lane closures and east and west access to 51st Street will be closed at various points during the summer. In addition, 51st Street will be closed between Brookside Boulevard and Oak Street.

Parking areas for the retail shops will be accessible from Oak Street. Access to the Trolley Trail will remain open.

UMKC encourages faculty, staff and students to patronize our cooperative friends and neighbors in these retail centers. The university greatly appreciates their patience.
