Free Dental Care for Local Children

The University of Missouri-Kansas City’s School of Dentistry hosted 150 elementary school children —many who had never visited a dentist — at the Give Kids A Smile clinic Feb. 1.

More than 130 UMKC dental and dental hygiene students, as well as a dozen local dental professionals, volunteered to provide a wide variety of dental services. The services ranged from exams, cleanings and fluoride treatments to sealants, restorative care and oral surgery. The children were from Primitivo Garcia, Center, Gladstone and Pitcher elementary schools in Kansas City; Bonner Springs Elementary in Bonner Springs; and Arbor Creek Elementary in Olathe.

Along with critical dental care, there was fun to be had at the eighth annual event, including face painting, temporary tattoos, a Disney movie and a visit from the Tooth Fairy.

Sponsors for the event included Delta Dental of Missouri, Score 1 for Health, Henry Schein Dental Supply and Proctor and Gamble.
