UMKC’s weekly arts, sports and culture roundup

Each week, the University of Missouri-Kansas City offers an array of on-campus activities. It’s nothing new. UMKC has a long legacy of hosting countless culturally enriching events. These activities are part of what give UMKC a vibrant campus life, and make UMKC an arts and culture powerhouse. The influence of UMKC-based and UMKC-trained alumni extends well beyond the campus’ edge, so their activities are listed here as well.

                                                     Featured Event:

What:  Men’s basketball
Roos are ready for a matchup against the Roadrunners of Cal State University, Bakersfield. But not all the action is on the floor. UMKC students who register at the game will qualify for a drawing. The prize? A free semester of tuition, courtesy of the Athletics Department. The lucky winner will be announced during the game. Some restrictions apply.

When:  Thursday, Jan. 22, at 7:05 p.m.
Wait! Wait! There’s more!
A second men’s game against Seattle follows on Saturday, Jan. 24. That’s Retro Roo night, down at Municipal at 6:05 p.m. Wear your old Roo jerseys, t-shirts or sweatshirts. The team will be outfitted in uniforms from the past. Wonder what Kasey will wear?
They’re free to UMKC students with ID. Others pay $5 – $25. Children under 3 are free.

Jan. 21-27

What:  Hand Print Press National Print Exhibition
The UMKC Department of Art & Art History hosts an opening night lecture by Dr. Sandra Olsen, Director of the University at Buffalo (UB) Art Galleries and the juror for the Hand Print Press National Print Exhibition. Her talk will focus on the three women who were major contributors to the development of American printmaking. The three established studios where leading American artists could collaborate with skilled professional printers, creating high-quality pieces in the tradition of fine European workshops.

When: 
The exhibit opens Thursday, January 22, 2015, with a reception from 5 – 7 p.m. The lecture begins at 5:30 p.m. The exhibit will remains until Feb. 26, 2015.

What:  Conservatory Connections: Dan Thomas
This exciting collaborative program partners UMKC Conservatory musicians with the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art.  The goal of the program is to combine the visual and performing arts within the spaces of the museum to offer exciting new art interactions to the public

When:     Jan. 26, 1:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.

What:  8th Annual Martin Luther King Lecture
Acclaimed author, poet and activist Nikki Giovanni presents an Evening of Poetry, Love and Enlightenment. We could all use a dose of that.
Where:   Atterbury Student Success Center, Pierson Auditorium, 5030 Holmes St., Kansas City, Mo.
The program is sold out, so when Pierson is full, other patrons will be directed to an overflow room. There is one in Atterbury and one in the Miller Nichols Library.
When:    6 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 26

What:  HEMISPHERES: Sound Photographs from Madagascar
HEMISPHERES is an immersion. Through imagery, song and story, the audience is transported to Madagascar, to isolated corners of this remote island nation, and into an unprecedented collection of songs. This is part of the PortFOLio Series, sponsored by the UMKC Friends of the Library. The College of Arts and Sciences Alumni Association and Unbound are cosponsors.
Where:  Miller Nichols Library, Dean’s Gallery, 4th Floor, 800 E. 51st St., Kansas City, Mo.
When:  Now through Sunday, Feb. 22. A closing reception will be held Friday, February 13th, from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. For more information, please call Ashley Davis at 816-235-1531.

What:    Studios art exhibition
Studios Inc offers local artists assistance through a paid residency program with the space and the facilities to produce larger, more ambitious works. In return, the artists exhibit annually in The Studios Inc Exhibition Space. There is one going on right now.
Where:  Studios Inc Exhibition Space, 1708 Campbell, Kansas City, Mo.
When:   The exhibit is open and runs until Feb. 15.
UMKC Connection:  Exhibiting artist Ricky Allman is an associate professor in UMKC’s Department of Art and Art History.

What: The New Theatre Restaurant presents, “Forever Plaid,” This internationally acclaimed musical revue tells the story of four young, eager male singers who in 1950 meet their demise in a bus crash on the way to their first big concert. They return from Heaven to posthumously fulfill their dreams and give the concert that never was.
Where: The New Theatre Restaurant, 9299 Foster, Overland Park, Kan.
When:   Opened Feb. 19 for a run until May 3, 2015.
UMKC Connection: Co-owners Dennis Hennessy and Richard Carrothers are both UMKC graduates and both were presented with honorary doctorates by the UMKC College of Arts and Sciences in 2012.

What: On Behalf of One’s Obsessions
Exhibit of artists’ more daring, riskier, unconventional works. John Updike said that’s what distinguishes artists from entertainers.
Where: Haw Contemporary, 1600 Liberty Street, Kansas City, Mo.
When:  Now through Jan. 24, 2015. Check the gallery’s website for times.
