UMKC’s weekly arts, sports and culture roundup

Each week, the University of Missouri-Kansas City offers an array of on-campus activities. It’s nothing new. UMKC has a long legacy of hosting countless culturally enriching events. These activities are part of what give UMKC a vibrant campus life, and make UMKC an arts and culture powerhouse. The influence of UMKC-based and UMKC-trained alumni extends well beyond the campus’ edge, so their activities are listed here as well.

What: Vinson Cole & Friends Benefit Concert for Lyric Opera of Kansas City
Where:
Folly Theater, 1020 Central St., Kansas City, Mo.
When: Sunday, Jan. 11, 2015, at 4 p.m.
Vinson Cole & Friends pays tribute to Cole for his contributions to the world of opera. Cole, along with friends including Christine Brewer and Danny Belcher, will perform a concert of opera classics. Afterward, a reception with cocktails and hors d’oeuvres will be held for sponsors and ticket holders at the $125 level. Cole is a UMKC Conservatory of Music and Dance professor of voice.

What: Studios art exhibition
Where: Studios Inc. Exhibition Space, 1708 Campbell, Kansas City, Mo.
When: The exhibit begins with an opening night reception, Friday, Jan. 9, from 6 to 9 p.m. The show will last until Feb. 15.
UMKC Connection:  Exhibiting artist Ricky Allman is an associate professor in the Department of Art and Art History.

What: Women’s Basketball vs New Mexico State (Family Fun Day)
Where: Swinney Recreation Center, 5100 Rockhill Road, Kansas City, Mo.
When: Saturday, January 10, 2015, at 2 p.m.
It’s free to UMKC students with ID. Others pay $5 – $15. Children under 3 are free.

What: The New Theatre Restaurant presents, “Shear Madness,” a crazy murder mystery solved by you, the audience. The comedy stars Richard Karn, Tim “Tool Time” Taylor’s flannel-shirted buddy from “Home Improvement.”
Where: The New Theatre Restaurant, 9299 Foster, Overland Park, Kan.
When:    Now through Jan. 18, 2015.
UMKC Connection: Co-owners Dennis Hennessy and Richard Carrothers are both UMKC graduates and both were presented with honorary doctorates by the UMKC College of Arts and Sciences in 2012. For tickets and show times, visit the website.

What: On Behalf of One’s Obsessions
Exhibit of artists’ more daring, riskier, unconventional works. John Updike said that’s what distinguishes artists from entertainers.
Where: Haw Contemporary, 1600 Liberty Street, Kansas City, Mo.
When:  Now through Jan. 24, 2015. Check the gallery’s website for times.
