UMKC’s weekly arts, sports and culture roundup.

Every week, the University of Missouri-Kansas City offers an array of on-campus activities. It’s nothing new. UMKC has a long legacy of hosting countless culturally enriching events. These activities are part of what give UMKC a vibrant campus life, and make UMKC an arts and culture powerhouse. The influence of UMKC-based and UMKC-trained alumni extends well beyond the campus’ edge, so their activities are listed here as well.

Featured event:  Community Music and Dance Academy and Conservatory in the Schools spring concert

Outstanding Community Music and Dance Academy students are going through final preparations for their Spring 2014 Honors Recital. Select performers were nominated by their instructors.

In the past year, teachers from various Conservatory of Music and Dance divisions provided these students with lessons in music and dance classes and lessons, innovative concert programming and professional development. Summer programs and festivals were also part of the offerings. Summer Conservatory for Singers provides a musical experience for students interested in the art of singing; there is a composition workshop for young composers and a jazz camp for instrumentalists and vocalists.

Take a quick break and get back to your seat for the next offering. At 7:30 p.m., the outstanding Musical Bridges students from the Conservatory in the Schools courses are ready to dazzle you. Top-notch musicians and dancers among Conservatory faculty, alumni and graduate students offered instruction in area schools, where more than 2,400 community members benefited from these programs this year. This recital will also feature the 2014 Composers in the School Composition Winner and violist Michael Hall.

Community Music and Dance Academy classes are non-credit, and most classes are free. Some scholarships are available to cover fees for private lessons and some classes.

Young singers from kindergarten through high school seniors can join an age-level, non-credit choir. There are no auditions, but participants may try out for honor groups. They meet weekly from August through May, and produce at least four annual concerts and many more informal shows.
