Every week, the University of Missouri-Kansas City offers an array of on-campus activities. It’s nothing new. UMKC has a long legacy of hosting countless culturally enriching events. These activities are part of what give UMKC a vibrant campus life, and make UMKC an arts and culture powerhouse. The influence of UMKC-based and UMKC-trained alumni extends well beyond the campus’ edge, so their activities are listed here as well.

Featured Event: “Afflicted: Daughters of Salem”

What: The Coterie Theatre presents “Afflicted: Daughters of Salem.” This is a co-production with UMKC Theatre. This play explores the untold story of the Salem girls and the crucible of events that led to the Salem Witch Trials.

What: Art Exhibit: Wonder Women: SHEroes, Freedom Fighters, and Women Who Kick Butt! This art exhibit features superheoines of the Kansas City visual arts community whose works evoke the strength, courage, and resilience of the empowered woman. This event is co-sponsored by the UMKC Women’s Center, the Her Art Project and the Leedy-Voulkos Art Center.

What: V-Day Book Display. Stop by and check out books and information about the V-Day movement to end violence against women and girls. This is co-sponsored by the UMKC Women’s Center, UMKC’s Violence Prevention and Response Project and UMKC Libraries.

What: Folly for Five: Missouri Brass Quintet. This musical event will feature faculty members Keith Benjamin and Joseph Parisi, trumpets; Martin Hackleman, French horn; JoDee Davis, trombone; and Tom Stein, tuba.

What: The Spice of Life Miniseries organized by Robert Weirich, showcases piano variations from three centuries.

What: A master class with Concerto/Aria 2014 judge John Owings, professor of piano at Texas Christian University’s School of Music.

What: The New Theatre Restaurant presents, “Harvey,” a comedy by Mary Chase.

UMKC Connection: Co-owners Dennis Hennessy and Richard Carrothers are both UMKC graduates and both were presented in 2012 with honorary doctorates by the UMKC College of Arts and Sciences.

What: ArtSounds: A Tale of Two Rabbys, by Brian Padavic and Marisa Mackay. A Tale of Two Rabbys is a theatrical drama that combines opera with modern dance.

What: Folly for Five: Conservatory Orchestra. The orchestra will be directed by Robert Olson with graduate assistant conductor Parinya Chucherdwatanasak. This event will feature 2014 Chancellor’s Concerto Competition winner Sora Park, piano.

What: Musica Nova directed by Zhou Long. This event will feature winners of the Rebecca Sherburn 2014 Vocal Composition Competition.

What: UMKC’s Graduate Art History Association presents their first exhibition, “We Now Pronounce You: Redefining Marriage in the 21st Century.” The exhibition features contemporary artists from UMKC who have created visual interpretations of what marriage means in the current social and political climate. Two lectures will be featured this week. At 11:30 a.m. on Feb. 13, Jennifer Phegley of the Department of English will presentVictorian Girls Gone Wild: Valentine’s Day Courtship Adventures, the Periodical Press, and the Postal Service.” At 5:30 in the Tivoli Theatre, there will be a special showing of “Bridegroom.
