UMKC’s weekly arts, sports and culture roundup

Each week, the University of Missouri-Kansas City offers an array of on-campus activities. It’s nothing new. UMKC has a long legacy of hosting countless culturally enriching events. These activities are part of what give UMKC a vibrant campus life, and make UMKC an arts and culture powerhouse. The influence of UMKC-based and UMKC-trained alumni extends well beyond the campus’ edge, so their activities are listed here as well.

What: UMKC Women’s Basketball vs Western Illinois
Fresh off a big upset road win over Wichita State, the ‘Roos return home to celebrate Education Day. This game will feature special events designed for future ‘Roos! All child tickets will be just $5 each and will gain them access into a post-game autograph and university learning session. UMKC Athletics will provide pre-game refreshments of doughnuts, bagels, coffee and more for all faculty and staff and will provide complimentary tickets to the game.

What: The Way We Get By
After a hot night together, Beth and Doug wake up to the awkward afterglow of a complicated new reality. As they search for their clothes, they must decide if their passion can withstand the public fallout. Is love worth the risk? This sexy and surprising new work from playwright Neil LaBute will keep you guessing. WARNING: Steamy content and adult language. The production is directed by Darren Sextro.

What: Have You Met Miss Jones
Legendary star of film and TV, Shirley Jones is joined by her son, Patrick Cassidy, for a world premiere event featuring stories, memories and songs from Shirley’s amazing career.

UMKC Connection: Co-owners Dennis Hennessy and Richard Carrothers are both UMKC graduates and both were presented with honorary doctorates by the UMKC College of Arts and Sciences in 2012.

What: Bernard “Step Buddy” Anderson Exhibit
Jazz musician Bernard “Step Buddy” Anderson was an early innovator in multi-media presentations, combining slide shows with live musical performances. As an impressive amateur photographer, removed from the context of the multi-media shows, Anderson’s images provide a unique and often surrealistic viewpoint of the Kansas City landscape from the late 1970s.

What: Stop and Smell the Roses, Man
Graphic Artist and soon-to-be UMKC graduate, Alexa Rose Di Trolio, has displayed the culmination of her senior thesis.

What: Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer: The Musical
Back at The Coterie by extraordinary popular demand, the beloved television classic Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer soars off the screen and onto the stage this holiday season. See all of your favorite characters as they come to life in Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer: The Musical. It’s a colorful musical adventure that teaches us what makes you different can also be what makes you special. This production is directed by Jeff Church. Music direction is by Anthony Edwards and choreography is by Marc Wayne.

What: AJ Beu, Doctoral Recital
This is a doctoral recital for AJ Beu, tuba. Performance pieces include Newton: Capriccio; York: Four Paintings by Grant Wood; Telemann: Sonata in F Major; and
Holst: Second Suite in F Major.

What: Musica Nova
Musica Nova, directed by Zhou Long, performs contemporary works. Performance pieces include Macmillan: Intercession; Miller: Hunting Songs; Part: Variations for the Healing of Arinuska; Colquhoun: Charanga; Tenney: Having Never Written a Note for Percussion; Lyons: Bone Needles; Cage: Six Melodies; and Cardew: Scratch Music.

What: Jeff Curtin, Doctoral Recital
This is a doctoral recital for Jeff Curtin, trumpet. Performance pieces include Corelli: Sonata a Quattro; Neruda: Concerto in E-Flat Major; Cheetham: Concoctions; Honegger: Intrada; McCabe: Dances for Trumpet and Piano; Gershwin: Someone to Watch Over Me.

What: Bach’s Lunch
Bring your lunch and enjoy some Bach! John McDonald is the conductor. The performance piece is “Nimm, was dein ist, und gehe hin” BWV 144.

What: Hyunki Yoon, Doctoral Recital
This is a doctoral recital for Hyunki Yoon, piano. Performance pieces include Beethoven: Piano Sonata No. 13 in E-Flat Major; Schumann: Fantasiestücke, Op. 12; and Prokofiev: Piano Sonata No. 4 in C Minor, Op. 29.

What: A Christmas Carol
Kansas City’s favorite holiday tradition is back for its 36th season. KC Repertory Theatre’s A Christmas Carol tells the classic story of Ebenezer Scrooge, the curmudgeonly businessman who requires the intervention of a few spectral guides to understand the true meaning of Christmas and life. Complete with lively musical numbers, ornate costumes and dashing stagecraft, Dickens’ classic tale of hope and redemption continues to remind us what’s really worth celebrating – at the holidays, or any time!
