Volunteers and Interns

2015-2016 Volunteer Application

Volunteers and Interns are an integral part of the Rainbow Lounge and LGBTQIA Programs and Services. They help keep our Lounge orderly and friendly for all of its visitors. Volunteering is a great way to support the UMKC LGBTQIA community, meet new people, develop skills, and have fun.

Through volunteer and intern support and involvement, the Rainbow Lounge serves all students on the UMKC campus. Volunteers help establish an inclusive environment, welcoming all who seek support. We appreciate and depend on our volunteers as they provide an invaluable support to our LGBTQIA Programs & Services at UMKC.

Volunteer and Intern Responsibilities May Include:

  • Serve as first point of contact when students, faculty, staff, and visitors enter the Rainbow Lounge
  • Answer phones and maintain the Rainbow Lounge Library
  • Provide tours of the Rainbow Lounge, OSI/MSA, and Student Organization space to visitors
  • Provide resources and referral tools to students in need of extra support
  • Attend volunteer meetings
  • Assist in revising printed and online materials
  • Assist in researching topics on LGBTQIA related subjects
  • Organize materials for outreach programs such as Safe Space
  • Assist the LGBTQIA Programs & Services Staff with special events and project
  • Serve as a peer educator on campus LGBTQIA Speakers Bureau panels

Volunteer Commitment:

Volunteers are asked to commit to a work schedule for the semester dictated by the amount of time they have available. Students are requested to work a minimum of one two-hour shift per week. Due to the important role that they play in the Rainbow Lounge, we ask that volunteers refrain from wearing ear buds/earphones while on duty. Volunteers may study and/or work on homework during their shift if they are not assigned to a specific project.

Qualifications:

  • Must be enrolled undergraduate, graduate, or professional student at UMKC
  • Must be willing to serve as a positive support resource for the LGBTQIA community
  • Must agree to treat others with respect and dignity
  • Must maintain confidentiality

Internships

The LGBTQIA Programs & Services and Office of Student Involvement Internship Program allows students to receive academic credit and gain real-world skills by working with LGBTQIA programs at UMKC.

LGBTQIA interns can customize their focus based on desired experience. All interns receive weekly supervision, midterm and final evaluations centered around their goals. Internships last for one academic term (16 weeks) unless otherwise negotiated. For questions about internships or to schedule an appointment to discuss interest, contact Jonathan (pryorj@umkc.edu).
