Matriculation Ceremony features Mayor Sly James

The School of Law held its annual Matriculation Ceremony to welcome the entering class of 2011 on Thursday, Aug. 18.  One hundred and fifty new students were called into the Student Lounge from the Truman Terrace to begin their entre’ into the school and the legal profession.

Students were addressed by Dean Ellen Suni, who urged them to pursue excellence in a collaborative and collegial manner.  They then received an upbeat introduction to law school and UMKC from Student Bar President Curtis Moore.  Finally, Kansas City Mayor Sly James addressed the crowd of students, faculty, staff and inn master mentors, suggesting that lawyers, like Marines, are the few and the proud, and urging students to take that role seriously.

To conclude the ceremony, James administered an oath of admission to the new students.  The orientation program continued the theme of professionalism in community building exercises on Friday, Aug. 19 and with a community service project on Friday afternoon.
