Become a CITS Teaching Artist!

We are looking for self-directed, motivated, creative and flexible composers who have a strong passion for teaching!

Job description:

CITS connects current UMKC composition graduate students with students in area middle and high schools. Our CITS Teaching Artists visit Kansas City metro area schools weekly, working with students in a variety of areas including music composition, music theory, music history, music appreciation, and performance.  The CITS Teaching Artists are required to work closely with the area music teacher to develop a curriculum that meets each school’s needs.


  • must be a current or incoming (Fall ’17) graduate UMKC composition student
  • must be able to travel to area schools to deliver instruction


  • attend semesterly CITS Teaching Artist faculty meetings (beginning of each semester)
  • teach 15-18 weeks per semester
  • work closely with assigned area school teacher to design a curriculum that meets their needs
  • submit weekly lesson reports and attendance for each session taught as well as semester-end summary reports
  • complete online time sheets bi-weekly
  • communicate with the  Teaching Artist Coordinator regarding any issues with classes
  • participate in professional development sessions, guest artist visits, etc.
  • provide annual self-evaluations
  • respond promptly to Teaching Artist Coordinator requests


  • $27 per hour (within the 3-5 hour range/weekly per semester)
  • Or, CITS may be used for Academic Portfolio credit
