2015 CITS Competition

2015 COMPOSERS IN THE SCHOOLS ANNUAL COMPOSITION COMPETITION – The 2015 CITS COMPETITION IS NOW CLOSED. 

Composers in the Schools (CITS) strives for the highest ideals in composition and music theory pedagogy. CITS has offered composition lessons, music theory lessons, and music appreciation in area schools since 1993. In continuing our mission of furthering local composition and music education, we announce the 2015 Composers in the Schools Composition Competition.

All students participating in either Composers in the Schools or Musical Bridges are eligible to enter and students are highly encouraged to participate, as the adjudicators’ comments will be helpful for future development.

One work per composer will be accepted.  Application forms can be printed HERE or obtained from your CITS instructor.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

  1. Scores should be of a professional quality:
  • From a scoring program such as Sibelius or Finale, or clearly/neatly hand written.
  • Binding is not necessary.
  • Please indicate whether or not the score is transposed.
  • Individual parts are not necessary for the initial judging round; however, if your work is selected for performance, parts will be required on or around April 1, 2015.
  • Scores should include page and measure numbers.
  1. Submission materials will not be returned. Please submit photocopies, not originals.
  2. Recordings/MIDI realizations will not be necessary except in the event that the work contains electronic/electroacoustic components. In this case, please include a CD/DVD/data disk with your submission materials.
  3. Works may be of any style.
  4. Instrumentation will be for two instruments (example: trumpet and piano; violin duet; tuba and piccolo)
  5. Duration is open, though practicality is strongly advised.
  6. Submissions should be clearly marked with the composer’s name and the title of the work and should be paired with this submission form
  7. All materials must be submitted to your classroom music educator by the end of the school day on Monday, March 2, 2015.

 

COMPETITION RESULTS AND PRIZES

The competition winner and runners-up will be announced on March 20, 2015. The competition winner will be awarded the following:

  • Performance of the winning work by UMKC Conservatory musicians at the Conservatory in the Schools Final Concert on Sunday, May 17, 2014 at 5:00 p.m. in White Recital Hall, James C. Olson Performing Arts Center (4949 Cherry St., Kansas City MO 64110).
  • Full-tuition scholarship to the UMKC Summer Composition Workshop, to be held June 14 – 21, 2014.
